“This concise, practical, and potentially life-saving book should be required reading for every parent before their teen gets behind the wheel.”
Not So Fast, 3rd edition, helps empower and guide parents of the more than three million U.S. teens annually obtaining a driver's license. Updated with the latest information that takes into account the pandemic-fueled uptick in crashes, the latest vehicle technology and new driving risks, it provides advice about the critical decisions parents need to make before allowing their teens to get behind the wheel.
Authors Tim Hollister – a parent and safe driving advocate – and Pam Shadel Fischer – a traffic safety expert and parent – have been guiding parents of teen drivers for decades with their factual and easily applied advice. They confirm that supervision before driving is just as important for lowering crash risk as teaching teens how to turn at a busy intersection. Parents will learn priceless information for teaching novice drivers, including how to evaluate the circumstances of every driving trip, how to say "no” when necessary, how to prepare a "flight plan" for each drive, how to put safety before convenience.
Tim and Pam also explain the real dangers and risks for teen drivers and the benefits and limitations of driver education and training, so parents are prepared to take a proactive supervisory role.
Why a 3rd Edition?
The first edition was published by Chicago Review Press in 2013, and the second edition, written mainly in 2016, was published in 2018. Driving has changed dramatically since 2018, due to new vehicle technologies, distraction and the pandemic, and during the latter, crashes and fatalities increased significantly, including among teen drivers. Given the tremendous progress made over the past 20 years in reducing teen driver crashes, we don’t want to see this trend reversed. “Not So Fast” is a damn good book that has provided parents with sound advice they can use to help their teen drivers survive their most dangerous driving years.
About the Authors
Tim Hollister
Tim Hollister’s 17-year-old-son, Reid, died in a one-car crash on an interstate highway in Connecticut in 2006. Since then, Tim has turned his grief into action, helping to strengthen the state’s teen driver laws, launching a national blog for parents of teen drivers (From Reid’s Dad) and speaking about the issue at state and national conferences with the media. His blog was the genesis for the first edition of Not So Fast. He is also the author of His Father Still: A Parenting Memoir (2015), an Oprah’s Book Club summer recommended reading selection. Tim is a nationally recognized land use and environmental lawyer.
Pam Shadel Fischer
Pam Shadel Fischer has been addressing behavioral safety issues for nearly four decades and is recognized as one of the nation’s leading experts on teen driving. Her work began with AAA New Jersey and then as Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, helping to build and subsequently strengthen the state’s graduated driver license law. She has authored more than a dozen national traffic safety publications for the Governors Highway Safety Association, where she currently serves as a Senior Director, and collaborated with Tim to write the 2nd edition of Not So Fast in 2016. Her most important work, however, has been partnering with her only child to help him become a safe driver.
